Stateman mixes wide mix
'Nine,' 'Basterds' mixer comes full circle
By DAVID JOHN FARINELLA

Wylie Stateman surely had some sense of déjà vu while standing on the dub stage during the mixing dates for "Nine."
After all, Stateman's introduction to Hollywood came in 1980 on "A Coal Miner's Daughter," another milestone film that used music to tell the story, time stamp a period and progress the plot.

"From then on, putting film and music together became a passion and something that I found extremely satisfying," he explains.

Yet, he's branched into a wide variety of films, including 2009's "Inglorious Basterds." This year's schedule already includes dates with Oliver Stone on "Wall Street 2" and Ridley Scott on "Robin Hood."

"I take a very holistic and big picture view of post production sound," Stateman says of his work. "It's truly a gift where you can imagine something, realize it and then paint it on a screen to show to people. And not just one person, but if you're lucky, and sometimes we're lucky, to a billion people. That's a line from "Nine," but this a fantastic art form where a handful of artisans get to practice their storytelling techniques and present compelling art."
