Stone spoke at the Foreign Correspondent's Club of Thailand with a 25 minute speech called "Filmmaking and Peace Building" in which he acknowledged the current record shattering movie: "I hope that ("Avatar") is crawling into the unconscious of the world" and says that popular movies can be the "guerrillas of the mind".
I happen to be doing some research for posts about science-fiction projects Stone has been involved with ("The Demolished Man", "Wild Palms", "Planet of the Apes") so this brings up a good point. Why doesn't Stone take a break from the heavy duty dramas (which are getting hard to finance) and try coming in through a side door? He's said he wants to try different genres but he rarely does ("The Doors" could be seen as a musical, maybe "Natural Born Killers" and "U-Turn" as comedies).
He also called this "a dark time - darker than anything I've ever known in my 60 - plus years".

"Filmmaking and Peacebuilding"
